Tantra offers physical, tangible techniques to reach Transcendence, the ultimate goal of all Yogas. In the Tantric concept, the body is the ultimate Yantra or mystical symbol. The body’s subtle energy system is manipulated by breath, posture, dance and sexual intercourse. One of the most powerful spiritual practices I have found is a rigorous, sensual type of belly dancing. This fiery practice circulates the life-force and strengthens creativity by effect. The intense movement also applies tremendous heat to the subtle energy system, breaking apart Tamasic energy.
In the Tantric concept, the physical form is an embodiment of Shakti, one of two Eternal cosmic principles. Beyond the Abyss, there is no division between Shakti and Shiva, but here in the World there is. Please understand, the physical aspect is not “less than” the spiritual, because Shakti is not “less than” Shiva. Each is contingent upon the other. Tantra reveals, if the body is the natural vehicle, or physical expression of this consciousness—the body can be ornamented, sanctified and used as an instrument for Enlightenment. Shakti is therefore venerated as the physical, interactive aspect of a higher cosmic principle. This is why Yoga is the supreme science of the Mind and Body, and Tantra illustrates how external radiance is a symptom of internal bliss.
Conversely, when Kundalini is bound to the soil (Muladhara), she remains asleep in Darkness. She is compelled to dwell within the terrestrial level of Reality, a limited experience which many find flavorless. When the heated force of KAMA (Desire) lifts Kundalini above the base (Muladhara), the mystic quest toward LOVE, or PREMA begins. By this fact, the Ancients deeply understood the cosmic power of sensuality. Skilled presentations of rapture naturally reveal the eternal, creative principle. Simply glimpsing an erotic pictorial can rapidly induce an exalted state. Thus, temples seeped with statues of luscious, ripe scarlet goddesses and droves of artful lovers coiling in starry bliss. This is because KAMA or DESIRE is inherently fiery, transformative and magical, if steered successfully.
