The Alchemist must know what is being transformed, to transform it. 

Undoubtedly, astrology it is not the only system to consider in the pursuit of 'KNOW THY SELF', but it is as good as any, if used correctly with other theory and technique. A framework is implemented to achieve some organization and uniformity; but one must attempt to penetrate the actual essence and feeling contained.

 

Dominant planets have tremendous influence on the native, for example, as they 'direct' or 'comb' all other energies in the natal chart. Every ‘nature essence’ and ‘planetary type[1]’ has its own particular energetic architecture—a launching pad upon which one may operate most beneficially. Each essence mirrors perfectly a part of the macrocosm, or a respective stage as outlined in many correspondence systems.

 

Each planetary essence has its own ‘sensation’, atmosphere and mode of orientation—this essence is sometimes nebulous and imprecise, more akin to an ornate, immersive makeup application than merely processing cubes. There is a formula to this correspondence system, but there must be room for nuance, subtly and gnostic observation. One will discern this nature essence patterned brilliantly in the external world, both in blazing neon signs and elusive hisses.

 

Surely, a pattern is something to consider; phenomena as rudimentary as a 4-year-old distinguishing between ‘pink’ and ‘purple’ animal crackers paraded on a napkin, or as nuanced as the detectives of Mind Hunter developing a criterion for discerning (some) sameness in pathological behavior. The effective way to perceive of patterns arises from a purified, integrated consciousness. The term ‘purity’ is used energetically, as to be expounded upon posteriorly.
