The Moon is dewy, rounded and liquescent; she shines brilliantly in her vermillion violet, swelling a slight crinoline of cold jade upon sleeping forests. In the Druidic Mysteries, the Beth-Luis-Nion system is a tree alphabet used for divination. Each sacred tree bears great mystical efficacy and mythic correspondence. This magical alphabet conceals two “esoteric trees,” Wild Apple (Quert), within the Hazel’s month of August, and Blackthorn (Straif) in the month of Willows. Willows are of the Moon, sacred to Inanna, Hecate, Circe, and Persephone. Apples and Willows are seasonally related, but notably they are sensually related. Both trees bestow poetic gifts unto the Poet; Willows confer deep lyrical prowess and Apples accord poetic immortality. Orpheus attains to ethereal eloquence by petting Persephone’s willows, depicted in portrait by Polygnotus at Delphi. In Welsh lore, Sion Kent sips a succulent, sticky apple, and eternally enchants the living with his intoxicating lyrics. Inanna, Daughter of the Moon, loves the Poet by scarlet fire and extols him to sublime verse.

Particularly the Poet is dazzled to the Wood by the Muse, where the incident is impressed in an artwork thereafter. The more full-bodied, fragrant and feverish the impetus, the mightier the work. Thus the work calcifies within the Psyches of spectators; immortalized by crimson fruit. To tie thread, “The Wandering Aengus,” a treasured WB Yeats poem, constellates Hazels and Apples among the titular Aengus, who in Celtic lore, is the God of Love. Avalon Apple Orchards are twin to Elysian Fields, and etymologically, Avalon to Avernus, the Domain of the Dead. To divulge the Apple’s secret, starry center, the fruit must be pierced particularly, likely by the Witches Knife, which symbolizes instinct that flows from the root. Subtle and bodily wholeness (Purna) occurs first interiorly, thus concealed. Nonetheless, our Eevening Starr dwelleth with hooks hovering atop the Underworld, excitedly straddling the Lions Gate. The dead, fitting to Yeats, “make love in that union which Swedenborg has said is of the whole body and seems far off from incandescence.”
